Meherpur Sadar Upazila is under Meherpur District with an area of 261.42 Sq. Km. is bounded by West Bengal ( India ) and Gangni Upazila on the north, Mujibnagar Upazila on the south, Gangni upazila and Alamddanga upazilas on the east and West Bengal ( India ) on the west. Bhairab is the main river of this upazila. The notable beels (depression) are, Chand Beel, Bhadgari Beel and Datpur Beel.
Meherpur Sadar Thana was turned into an upazila in 1984. The upazila consists of one municipality, 5 union parishads and 72 villages. Its total population is about 230880, male 52% and female 48%. Out of them Muslim 98% and Hindu only 2%.
Literacy rate is 25%, male 29% and female 20%. Educational institutions are; college 6, higher secondary school 31, primary school 101, madrasha 15 and kindergarten 12. Main occupations of this upazila are; agriculture 37%, agri. labour 34%, business 14% and other activities 15%. Women are mainly involved as day labourer.
Paddy is the main crop, followed by wheat, potato, jute, tobacco, betel leaf, onion, garlic and chilli. Extinct or nearly extinct crops are; sesame, mustard, barley, linseed and indigo. The wage rate in agriculture ranges between taka 50 to taka 70 and for non-agriculture taka 80 to taka 100.
